THE WORLD AS 1 – Olivera Velkova
The Art of Olivera Velkova is unpresumptuous although at the same time vividly strong. Her intention is not to put on and to announce or transmit a certain narration, but she initiates the observer while the act of observing to drown into his inland, in his intimacy and to become aware of himself, and trough oneself to become aware of the Other, as well as the world around him. Therefore, the title of the exhibition: The World As 1.
Stylistically and conceptionally the artworks are different, but the panoptic behind them represents different states of mind and reflections of Velkova. Behind each and every artwork there’s a hidden story that remain only hers or it is inspired, as a beginning, in the title of the artwork; but the abstract direction of the artworks allows freedom in decoding of the message or the emotion.
The abstract expressionism, as also the art of colored field, are the main stylistic directions on the canvases. On one hand are the pure vivid fields without sharp edges, with certain switches in another nuance or color, as simple ideas but concentrated art cores, which are treating the problem of Sun on different levels. The other type of artworks where the previous pragmatic and rational colorings switch in dynamic and fissured movements that obviously according to the action of motion, have characteristics of transmitting a deep emotional bound, feeling, mental condition. In certain moments these movements are successively prolonged one after another, and with what’re suggesting a motion, that on different paintings has different directions, sometimes straightforward directed movements and rhythms, and sometimes spirally, as a storm, like introvert or the opposite, extravert set up movement of the emotion. The softness and poured out chromatic directions are creating the misty apparition that in certain segments is interrupted with sharp colored unit or segment, that brings the attention back, on the reality. Thus is for example the artwork “La-Croix Influence”.
Sometimes, in certain artworks are appearing particular significant signs or forms, so there are even paintings consisting only and uniquely known symbols, such as the word LOVE, which is projected entirely on the surface of the canvas transmitting the message directly.
In accordance with the line of the abstract expressionism, “the dripping” as an expressive action of splashing or “flowing” of colors, is one other form of painting complementation of the composition’s organization of Velkova’s paintings, in a role of secondary finish of the idea. This can be foreseen best in the artwork “Lava”.
The color, in Velkova’s art of painting, carries the primate of the creator of the idea, or the beginner of the reflection. The equal treatment of the harmony and the chaos, creates equilibrium which is necessary for one artwork in order not to be neither boring, neither mixed-up, because harmony without chaos doesn’t exist, nor vice versa.
Besides with art of painting, Velkova takes also interest in photography, in which she is the principal “pillar”. The photography as well as the paintings have different stylistic approach and compose placement, but still their treating in general is: the happiness of living.
The photography“Happiness Is Mind – Happiness is Mind, is treating several painter’s elements and key principles of an endured artwork. Black and white technique, interesting perspective, with elevated view angle, a composition that offers new aspect of observing and receiving of the performance, excellent approach towards the accenting of the texture and alignment and emphasis of the plans, excellent treatment of the contrast light-shadow etc. On the other hand “Hush Baybe…Jazz in Paris” has more classic treatment. It’s about a color-photography that is representing a group figurative scene, in urban-jam ambient, but thus what’s interesting here, is that the emphasis isn’t achieved with frontal obtrusiveness, but with the excellent freezing of breaking of light.
Velkova identifies herself with her art. Trough her art, she transmits her vision and sensibility for the basic elements: air, water, earth and fire; her own philosophical postures for love, birth, growth and progress, loss, separation, death, those basic values that makes the life a life, and us people.
